More than 80 Northern Rivers singers and musicians will come together at 3pm on June 30 to raise the rafters of the Mullumbimby Civic Hall in a massive fundraiser to help settle refugee families in the region.

The concert is the signature event for Ballina Region for Refugees (BR4R) to mark Refugee Week in Australia. BR4R has already helped four refugee families settle locally and is about to welcome more.

The Finding Freedom Concert comes under the creative magic of Janet Swain of Song Dynasty Music. Her Big Voice Choirs from Brunswick Heads and Murwillumbah will combine for the first time to sing great songs. Topping it off will be the the anthemic song Finding Freedom, composed by Janet.

The line-up includes the fabulous The Material Girls from Bangalow, Elliott Orr and Zormiwasa African Drum Ensemble, as well as Bangoura Ke from Guinea. Janet’s Big Voice Choirs will sound out Foo Fighters’ Times like These, Best Day of my Life by Tom Odell, This Love by Taylor Swift.

Front man for the afternoon’s concert will be everyone’s favourite MC, Mick O’Regan, who helps out with so many good causes.

Finding Freedom: Family is the theme of Refugee Week this year from June 16-22.

“In this concert, we shine a light on the idea of freedom through music and song,” says Janet.

“We can reflect on what it would be like to live without fear of war, to live in equality and have basic human rights upheld. Every day, millions of people across the world embark on dangerous journeys to find safety and freedom.

“Here on the Northern Rivers, it’s easy to take our freedom for granted – to move around, to love who we want to love, to debate and protest and stand up for our rights.”

Janet promises an afternoon to remember. There will be food, merchandise, and a chance to find out more about the important work that Ballina Region for Refugees is doing to settle refugees in our community.

Tickets $25/$20. Family $50.
