A fun night of trivia was held at Ocean Shores Country Club on August 24 to help support three Afghan artists who are seeking asylum.
Organiser Sara Gloede said the night was a big success but more funds were needed to help Krishma, Sabz and Hamzi. The trivia night was hosted by the wonderful Kiki Delux.
A local initiative was established more than two years ago to help at-risk Afghani artists apply for Australian Humanitarian Visas.
“I was partnered with an actress and her director husband, and later on, another actress after
her Australian visa helper withdrew,” Sara said.
“I have come to know them all, and seen what they have endured – televised threats,
Taliban home visits, total loss of income and, most alarmingly, multiple kidnap attempts
for the single actress, who does not have any men in her family – a significant problem.
“Australia will not offer visas to Afghanis in Afghanistan. Their only chance for safety is
to move to Pakistan, register with the UNHCR and hope for a visa to Australia or
another safe country.
“I also want to put a call out to see if anyone is willing to ‘sponsor’ the artists.”
