The remarkable true story of a woman shaking off the stifling bonds of society to live her own life forms the core of the Drill Hall Theatre Company’s production of The Chronicles of Eldershaw. A special fundraising performance in aid of NRFR will be staged on Wednesday, October 9, and tickets are on sale now.
The play is an adaptation of a narrative verse novel, Eldershaw, by Stephen Edgar, that was shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Poetry Prize in 2013.
The Chronicles of Eldershaw tells the story of Helen, a rebellious and mischievous woman who liberates herself before women’s liberation was widely known.
In her youth, she embraced the sensual nature of the Tasmanian forest. She went on to challenge the conformity of marriage and family to follow a bohemian life beginning in Hobart in the 1950s.
The Drill Hall production has been adapted for the stage by Gregory Aitken and directed by Kate Horsley. It features a strong cast of experienced actors.
