Taking Action

BR4R holds vigils:
– to remember and respect refugees who have died
– on Palm Sunday each year in line with other refugee groups across Australia to make a statement that refugees are welcome

Speakers include refugees telling their stories, representatives from local and state government and refugee advocates and supporters. We are joined by singers and have listened to messages directly from people on Manus Island and Nauru.

In 2017, BR4R held a vigil on 19th July – four years since government policy was enacted that anyone seeking asylum and arriving by boat would never settle in Australia.

We had our very first stall at the Ballina Canal Road Market in December 2016.

We’ve continued with our stall there since then and you’ll find us on the 3rd Sunday of every month at Canal Road Ballina from 7am to 1pm. This excellent market is run by the East Ballina Lions Club who kindly provide the site free of charge.

Our stall sells a diverse range of items including fresh popcorn, pre-loved clothes, books and bric-a-brac.

We recently started operating an information stall where people can learn more about BR4R, join our mailing list, sign up as a volunteer or nominate to be a BR4R member.

While this market is small compared to others in the region it is affectionately known as the friendliest market around.

BR4R was also selected  as Charity of the Day at the Lismore Car Boot Market in March 2018.  This was an excellent opportunity for raising awareness of the refugee & asylum-seeker situation as well as some wonderful fund-raising.

We have a wonderful group of volunteers who help to make the stalls at the markets a success.

If you are interested in helping out or becoming a volunteer contact Trish via our contact page

BR4R is available to give talks to community groups and at special events.

Talks have been given at Harmony Day and on local media such as Paradise FM and Bay FM.

There have also been presentations at local schools
