Which dog used to fantasise about shooting down the Red Baron in an air battle?  Snoopy of course! And do you know the meaning of the word ‘flivver’? Could it be a new flavour of ice cream made with honeyed liver?

Those were two of the many questions that caused consternation and laughter at a recent trivia night held by one of our newest Community Supporter Groups (CSG), Ballina Refugee Resettlement and Welcome Network (BRRAWN).

Over 100 people attended the event at Ballina RSL Club, with 13 teams competing for first place.

The Ballina RSL donated the room hire and sound equipment cost of over $800, and many other local businesses provided raffle prizes. $2800 was raised towards supporting the settlement of another refugee family.

Sometime in January, BRRAWN will be welcoming a Syrian family of six – a young couple with four boys aged 8, 7 and 3 (the youngest are twins).

At time of writing, the group is looking for donations of two car seats and two booster seats. They have already gathered most of the household goods needed, including fridge and washing machine, but if anyone has toys, coloured pencils and colouring books (especially very basic ones that might teach reading) they would be gratefully received.  Please phone Christine on 0431 225 942.

As you’ve probably guessed, flivver is not a new flavour of ice cream: it’s a cheap car or aircraft.  So next time you get on a plane, let’s hope it’s not a flivver.
